New York Giants vs Houston Texans – NFL Prediction
Match Preview
The Giants sit atop the NFC East at 3-2-1, but you would never guess it given the circus inside their facility. Head coach John Harbaugh just handed the starting quarterback job to J.J. McCarthy after benching Jameis Winston, while defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson publicly called his own players “traitors to the defense” following a 34-27 loss to New Orleans. Can a newly acquired quarterback fix a locker room that is actively fighting itself? I am not so sure, especially with Houston coming off back-to-back division wins and smelling blood in the water.

What a bizarre situation in New York. Jaxson Dart goes down for the year against the Rams, the front office trades for J.J. McCarthy from Minnesota, and now he is thrown straight into the fire. To be fair to McCarthy, he looked lively coming off the bench against New Orleans, throwing for 243 yards and a touchdown while driving the offense for three scores. But averaging two turnovers a game as a team will sink you against real competition every time.
The real issue for me is the total collapse on defense. You simply cannot have your coordinator calling players traitors in the media unless things are completely unraveling behind closed doors. New York put together solid wins over Arizona 36-24 and Tennessee 12-7 earlier this year, but giving up 34 points to the Saints exposed massive cracks in this unit. Combine that with a run game averaging under 93 yards per contest, and McCarthy is going to be forced into obvious passing downs all afternoon.

Is Houston finally waking up? They started slow with losses to Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and a 34-30 heartbreaker to Dallas, but consecutive victories over Tennessee and Jacksonville have saved their season. The main reason for optimism is Will Anderson Jr., who is playing like an absolute monster and looks like a legitimate Defensive Player of the Year candidate. When Anderson gets going off the edge in DeMeco Ryans’ scheme, opposing quarterbacks rarely survive intact.
They certainly have flaws you can exploit. Houston ranks 25th in early-down rushing success rate at just 29.4 percent, and they constantly get stuck in third-and-long situations where they need over seven yards on average. On top of that, young cornerbacks Derek Stingley Jr. and Kamari Lassiter have repeatedly surrendered big plays in contested-catch moments. Still, averaging around 273 passing yards while turning the ball over just 0.2 times per game gives them a huge operational advantage.

These franchises split their last two matchups, with Houston claiming a 28-10 victory in 2024 after New York took a 24-16 battle back in 2022. I do not put any weight on those past results for this game. New York is debuting a completely new starting quarterback under center, and Houston is playing a vastly different brand of football under Ryans than they were a few years ago.

Jaxson Dart’s season-ending knee injury remains the defining lineup loss for New York. Houston has its own headache with a banged-up linebacker group, plus key players like Dalton Schultz, David Montgomery, and Jalen Pitre tagged as questionable.
Betting Analysis & Tips
| Market | Selection | Odds |
|---|---|---|
| Moneyline | New York Giants | 4.30 |
| Moneyline | Houston Texans | 1.18 |
| Total | Over/Under | 43.0 |
The oddsmakers have Houston installed as massive favorites at 1.18, but an 11.8-point spread feels a bit high for a team with a struggling run game and defense injuries. We project a 26-19 Houston win, which leads me to take New York and the points. I also like the over on the 43.0 total line because both secondary groups have been giving up chunk plays recently.
Final Prediction
I’m taking the Texans to win straight up because of their elite ball security and Will Anderson Jr.’s pass rush. That said, McCarthy should move the ball enough to cover that bloated spread. Give me Houston to win, but grab the Giants plus the points.
| Predicted Score | New York Giants 19 – 26 Houston Texans |
| Most Likely Result | Houston Texans Win |
