Washington Commanders vs Dallas Cowboys – NFL Prediction
Match Preview
Both of these NFC East rivals enter sitting at a 40% win rate over their last five games and desperately need to set the tone. Dallas is trying to fix a defense under new coordinator Christian Parker that just surrendered touchdowns on three straight drives to the Giants, while Washington is picking up the pieces after a tight 24-22 loss to Philadelphia. Can Dak Prescott and the Cowboys clean up the unforced errors, or will Washington crash the party as a home underdog? I think this game is going to be much tighter and much lower-scoring than the betting public expects.

What bothers me about Washington right now is the complete lack of juice in the passing game. They are averaging under 145 passing yards and around 259 total yards over their past five contests. That simply isn’t going to get it done against top-tier opposition.
They hung tough in that two-point loss to the Eagles, but the injury report is already troubling. Linebacker Frankie Luvu went down with a groin issue against Philly, forcing Leo Chenal to take over on defense, while tight end Chig Okonkwo left with a hamstring issue. Add in the fact that they fired defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. after last season, and this unit is still trying to establish a firm identity. They did notch a solid 20-7 win over Miami earlier in August, but averaging around 116 yards on the ground isn’t enough to carry an offense if the air attack stays completely dormant.

I’ll be honest, Dallas looked lost on defense during that 28-20 loss to the Giants. Christian Parker’s defense featuring Quinnen Williams and Rashan Gary posted the worst success rate in the league in Week 1 at 39.7%, allowing New York to convert 9 of 11 third downs. They blitzed at the seventh-highest rate in the NFL yet somehow ranked 21st in pressure rate while surrendering 29 plays between 5 and 15 yards. That short coverage was an absolute disaster, and letting the Giants go 4-for-4 in the red zone is completely unacceptable for a talent-heavy roster.
The offense didn’t do them many favors either. CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens were held to a combined 27 receiving yards in the first half, Pickens dropped two passes, and Dak Prescott threw a terrible back-foot interception right before halftime. Dallas averages north of 335 total yards per game, but statistics do not mean a thing when you repeatedly shoot yourself in the foot.

Dallas has mostly owned this head-to-head series, winning four of the last five meetings including a 30-23 battle late last season and a 44-22 blowout. Washington’s only real high note was a 23-19 victory back in January 2025. Given how vulnerable Dallas looked defensively in their opener, I’m not placing too much weight on those past blowouts.

Betting Analysis & Tips
| Market | Selection | Odds |
|---|---|---|
| Moneyline | Washington Commanders | 2.62 |
| Moneyline | Dallas Cowboys | 1.43 |
| Total | Over/Under | 50.0 |
The oddsmakers have Dallas listed as heavy favorites at 1.43, but I’m not buying that huge gap given their defensive struggles. Our analysis projects a tight 22-17 score line, which makes the game total line of 50.0 feel bloated. I see incredible value in taking the under 50.0 here, as both teams are still trying to find their rhythm offensively.
Final Prediction
Dallas clearly has the edge on paper with superior total yards, but their Week 1 defensive collapse gives me real hesitation about laying big points. That said, I expect Dak Prescott to protect the ball better and do just enough to squeak out a divisional victory. My gut says Dallas gets the win, but I’m sticking with the under as my favorite play.
