Match Preview

Head coach Todd Monken handed Deshaun Watson the starting job over second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders, and the tension in Cleveland is already boiling over. Calling out fans for booing him in the preseason was a bad look for Watson, especially after completing just 5 of 12 passes against Buffalo and getting smashed 34-10 by Jacksonville in his first start in almost two years. Can Cleveland recover from that drama before Tampa Bay comes knocking? I am not so sure.

I don’t love what I am seeing out of this Cleveland offense right now. Averaging roughly 281 total yards with under 160 passing yards per game isn’t going to win many ballgames in today’s NFL.

Look at the recent track record. They got blown out 34-10 by Jacksonville and surrendered 31 points to Buffalo in the preseason. They did put together a nice 37-13 win over New England, but two separate 34-10 losses over their last four games tell me this defense bleeds points when the front seven gets pushed around. With a mounting injury list featuring Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah on the PUP list and Teven Jenkins banged up, they simply don’t have the depth to cover up those mistakes.

Tampa Bay isn’t exactly cruising into this matchup on smooth water, but I think they have a clearer identity. They put up 27 points in a narrow 33-27 loss to Cincinnati recently and snatched close wins against Kansas City, New York, and Carolina. My big worry with the Bucs comes down to ball security. Turning it over twice a game on average and averaging barely 101 yards on the ground forces them into tough third-down situations.

Can they clean up the sloppy play after dropping a 19-0 goose egg to Jacksonville? If Sean Tucker and Jalen McMillan are hobbled by injuries, Tampa Bay will need every bit of their passing attack to carry the load.

Head-to-Head Record

These teams have not met in recent seasons.

Stylistically, this comes down to which squad stops the bleed first after both allowed over 30 points last week. Tampa Bay edges Cleveland in the passing game with around 175 yards per game compared to Cleveland’s 160, but the Browns run it better at roughly 122 yards on the ground. When you stack Cleveland’s heavy turnover margin against Tampa Bay’s giveaway habits, we are looking at a messy, low-scoring grind in the trenches.

Cleveland missing Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah on PUP hurts their defensive speed, while Tampa Bay monitoring Jalen McMillan and Sean Tucker leaves their skill positions dangerously thin.

Betting Analysis & Tips

Market Selection Odds
Moneyline Cleveland Browns 3.90
Moneyline Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1.21
Total Over/Under 41.5

The oddsmakers have the Browns as long shots at 3.90, but our breakdown projects a tight 18-16 Cleveland victory with a low total of 34 points. I know SI is backing the over 40.5 line because both defenses gave up 30-plus last week, but I am fading that logic entirely. Given two sluggish offenses that average well under 300 total yards each, I see huge value on the under.

Final Prediction

I’m taking Cleveland minus the 3.0 spread to bounce back and pull off the tight win. Watson’s fan drama and rust give me a slight pause, but their ground game should do just enough to control the clock. Give me the Browns 18-16.
