Match Preview

Head coach Robert Saleh making his Tennessee debut against his former team in New York is the exact kind of drama I love. Add in running back Breece Hall confirming he is cleared for a full workload after a groin strain, and this season opener gets spicy in a hurry. Can New York jumpstart an offense that averaged barely 209 yards per game recently? My gut says it will be a heavy lift against Saleh’s defense.

Turnovers 1.4/game

The offense in New York has been painfully tough to watch. Averaging under 110 passing yards per game is a fast track to nowhere in today’s football.

Look at their recent performances: getting blown out 42-10 by New England and 35-8 by Buffalo, then managing just 6 points in a loss to the Giants. Sure, they posted a clean 17-0 shutout win over Pittsburgh, but head coach Frank Reich is already prepping a running back rotation due to backfield injuries. They named Geno Smith and Minkah Fitzpatrick team captains, so the leadership is clear in that locker room. But unless they cut down on their 1.4 turnovers per game, this offense is going to stall out early.

Turnovers 0.4/game

How quickly can Robert Saleh get this Titans squad playing his style of football? Tennessee brings a bit more momentum into this one, coming off close wins against Seattle (19-16) and San Francisco (19-13) before a 24-15 pre-season bump against Chicago. What jumps out to me is how well they take care of the football, averaging a tidy 0.4 turnovers per game while accumulating nearly 295 total yards. They also added cornerback Jaylon Jones right before Week 1 to give that secondary extra depth.

If their passing attack hits its average of around 180 yards against New York, Tennessee will dictate the game script. I simply do not see New York matching that kind of sustained production.

Head-to-Head Record

Date Stage Match Score Winner
2024-09-15 Regular Season Tennessee Titans vs New York Jets 17-24 New York Jets
Team Wins
New York Jets 1
Draws 0
Tennessee Titans 0

The last time these two franchises crossed paths, New York walked away with a 24-17 victory back in September 2024. I am not putting much stock in that result today. With Saleh standing on the opposite sideline now and both rosters reworked, that past matchup means very little to me for this opener.

Keep an eye on Titans linebacker Cedric Gray as he deals with concussion protocol ahead of kickoff. For New York, having Breece Hall declared fully healthy is massive, though injuries elsewhere in the backfield will force Reich into a rotation.

Betting Analysis & Tips

Market Selection Odds
Moneyline New York Jets 1.91
Moneyline Tennessee Titans 1.79
Total Over/Under 38.5

Oddsmakers have this mapped out as a tight contest with Tennessee at 1.79 and New York at 1.91, but we project a defensive battle ending around 18-11 for the Titans. That 38.5 game total line feels way too high given New York’s offensive struggles and Tennessee’s low turnover rate. I see great value taking Tennessee on the moneyline and leaning heavily into the under.

Final Prediction

I’m taking Tennessee to secure the road victory and cover the 1.6 spread. New York’s lack of passing firepower scares me off picking them, even with Hall back in action. Give me Saleh getting the win over his old team.

Predicted Score New York Jets 11 – 18 Tennessee Titans
