Match Preview

How desperate can a team get before the calendar even hits mid-October? The Miami Dolphins enter Week 5 sitting at 0-4, averaging a miserable 11.5 points per game while bleeding talent to the training room. On the other sideline, Cincinnati is trying to shake off a tough 22-17 loss to Jacksonville despite Joe Burrow dropping 428 yards through the air. Can a banged-up Bengals receiving corps still put away a winless Miami squad? I fully expect them to try, but this game comes down to who actually has enough healthy bodies to finish the fourth quarter.

What frustrates me about this Bengals team is how they can put up massive numbers and still find a way to lose. Burrow threw for 428 yards against Jacksonville in Week 4, but two brutal interceptions doomed them in a 22-17 loss.

My biggest concern right now is the medical tape wrapped around this wide receiver room. Ja’Marr Chase went into concussion protocol after the Jacksonville game, Tee Higgins is dealing with an adductor injury, Colbie Young has a knee issue, and Andrei Iosivas is on injured reserve after thumb surgery. That is an absurd amount of depth hit all at once. Still, Cincinnati proved earlier this season they can win ugly or lean on their defense, like when they held Houston to six points in a 20-6 road win. With an offense averaging north of 360 total yards per game, Burrow has enough juice to make plays even with secondary targets.

So where does that leave Miami? Honestly, in deep trouble. Losing running back De’Von Achane to a season-ending knee injury takes away the one explosive dynamic this offense had left, leaving Ollie Gordon II and Jaylen Wright to shoulder the load behind a struggling line. They scored just 10 points last week in Minnesota, 10 against Kansas City, and 13 against San Francisco. When your defense gives up around 24 points a game and your offense barely cracks double digits, you are not winning in this league.

I will give them credit for trying to patch things up, bringing defensive tackle Kenneth Grant back off injured reserve and elevating guys like Mazi Smith off the practice squad. But patching a ship with tape does not fix a passing game stuck under 165 yards a night.

Head-to-Head Record

If you look at the recent head-to-head history, Cincinnati has owned this matchup. They blew Miami out 45-21 in their last meeting late last year, and knocked them off 27-15 back in 2022. Given Miami’s current form, I do not see any reason why that trend suddenly flips.

The injury reports read like a novel, but Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins are the crucial names to watch for Cincinnati. Meanwhile, De’Von Achane’s season-ending injury completely strips Miami of top-end speed.

Betting Analysis & Tips

Market Selection Odds
Moneyline Cincinnati Bengals 1.28
Moneyline Miami Dolphins 3.30
Total Over/Under 43.0

The bookmakers set the total at 43.0, but our analysis projects a lower-scoring affair with a 26-11 finish that easily stays under that line. Squawka Signal likes Cincinnati at -5.8, and I agree that the Bengals cover the actual -4.1 spread line comfortably against an offense averaging barely 11 points. I see huge value in riding the under while taking Cincinnati to cover.

Final Prediction

I am taking the Bengals to get back above .500 and hand Miami its fifth straight loss. Burrow’s target availability makes me a little nervous, but Miami simply does not have the firepower to keep pace. Give me Cincinnati minus the points and the under all day.

Predicted Score Cincinnati Bengals 26 – 11 Miami Dolphins
