Two of Spain’s biggest clubs return to domestic action this week, with both Real Madrid and Barcelona heavily fancied against opponents who have endured torrid starts to the new campaign.

Real Madrid v Real Sociedad

Real Madrid return to the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday to host a Real Sociedad side who arrive with the look of a team in genuine crisis. Xabi Alonso’s men have won four of their last five outings across all competitions (WWWWD), averaging two goals a game while conceding fewer than one, numbers that speak to a side purring in both boxes.

The tactical picture favours the hosts comfortably. Real Madrid’s fluid positional interchange, with forwards and interior midfielders rotating through the half-spaces, has proven consistently difficult for La Liga defences to live with. Just as importantly, their rest-defence structure the shape they hold while attacking, has snuffed out opposition counters almost entirely, a key reason their goals-against column reads so favourably.

Their high line has been repeatedly punished by direct, vertical passing, and there is little in their recent form to suggest they can stem the tide in Madrid. History offers no crumbs of comfort for the visitors either: Real Madrid have won six straight meetings between the two clubs, most recently a 4-1 rout in February. Barcelona v Athletic Bilbao

A day later, Barcelona welcome Athletic Bilbao in what looks on paper a considerable mismatch. Hansi Flick’s side have been irresistible in recent weeks, a WWWLW run built on 2.6 goals scored per game against just 0.8 conceded figures underlined by a ruthless 5-0 demolition of Elche in their last league outing. Barcelona’s suffocating possession game continues to strangle the middle of the pitch, feeding a counter-press that has proven close to unplayable for teams without the quality to match them technically.

Athletic arrive in altogether worse shape. Ernesto Valverde’s side have lost four of their last five (LLLLW) and are conceding at a rate of two goals per match, their mid-block repeatedly pulled apart by sharper, more technical opposition. An attacking return of 1.2 goals a game leaves precious little margin for error if they’re forced into prolonged defending, which, against this Barcelona side, seems close to inevitable.

The head-to-head record makes for equally grim reading in Bilbao: five wins from the last six meetings for Barcelona, including a 4-0 hammering in November 2025. Athletic’s only point in that sequence came via a goalless draw back in March 2024.

The Bigger Picture

Both fixtures follow a similar script an in-form, structurally superior side at home against an opponent whose defensive foundations have come apart at the seams. On current form and history alike, Real Madrid and Barcelona look set to underline their status as the division’s benchmark sides. Whether the bookmakers’ pricing leaves any value in backing the obvious outcome is, as ever, a separate question entirely.
