Point Spread

A point spread is a betting market that handicaps a favorite by subtracting points and gives an underdog extra points to balance the matchup.

It is mainly used in American sports.

How it works

  • The favorite must win by more than the spread

  • The underdog can lose by fewer points than the spread or win outright

  • The spread is added or subtracted from the final score for settlement

Example

  • Team A: -6.5

  • Team B: +6.5

  • If Team A wins by 7+ points → bet wins

  • If Team A wins by 6 or fewer → bet loses

Key characteristics

  • Eliminates draws

  • Creates even odds on mismatched teams

  • Standard market in NFL, NBA, NCAA

Important note
Half-point spreads (e.g. -6.5) are used to avoid pushes and force a win or loss.
