A point spread is a betting market that handicaps a favorite by subtracting points and gives an underdog extra points to balance the matchup.
It is mainly used in American sports.
How it works
-
The favorite must win by more than the spread
-
The underdog can lose by fewer points than the spread or win outright
-
The spread is added or subtracted from the final score for settlement
Example
-
Team A: -6.5
-
Team B: +6.5
-
If Team A wins by 7+ points → bet wins
-
If Team A wins by 6 or fewer → bet loses
Key characteristics
-
Eliminates draws
-
Creates even odds on mismatched teams
-
Standard market in NFL, NBA, NCAA
Important note
Half-point spreads (e.g. -6.5) are used to avoid pushes and force a win or loss.
